History of Maimoon palace
Maimoon palace is one of the most beautiful castles still standing in Indonesia, exactly in the city of Medan, North Sumatra Province. Maimoon palace is one of the landmarks of Medan. Maimoon palace was built one hundred and twenty five years ago, in 1888, by an architecture who was a captain in the Royal Nederlandsch Indisch Legar (KNIL) called Th Van Erp and built in the heyday of Sultan Ma’mun Al Rashid Perkasa Alam, the eldest son of Sultan Mahmud Perkasa Alam, the founder of the city of Medan. Maimoon palace was built on an area of 217 X 200 m with one meter high fence. Maimoon palace is a relic of the Deli Sultanate. The building materials such as tile floors, marble and terrazzo used to build Maimoon palace were imported directly from countries such as Spain and Netherlands.. Maimoon palace has an interesting and unique architectural design because the palace consisted of many different cultures, including Malays, Islam, Middle East, India, and Europe. To build Maimoon palace, it needed fund equivalent to one million gulden (the currency of the Netherlands).
The beauty of the Maimoon Palace
Maimoon palace is very beautiful, proved with “Tourism Object of The Year” award given at the end of 2012 by the Government of Medan. The castle building consists of two floors and divided into three sections. There are the main building, the building left wing, and right wing. When you will enter the Maimoon palace, you will find a floor made of marble in the palace gates and beautiful cabinet that has many carvings. We should surround the entire building castles except the right wing, because right wing is the home of the royal family. When you begin to enter the Maimoon palace buildings, you will be amazed of the beauty of interior room. Across the wall of the building, there is a beautiful, detail, complicated, and full of color ornament. The chandelier that shines elegantly adds to the beauty of the room. The doors and windows of the palace use Netherlands and Spanish architectural pattern, adds to the beauty of the interior. On the roof of the palace you will find an arch or arcade model influenced by Islamic culture.
Maimoon palace has 40 rooms consisting of 20 rooms on the top floor (one of the rooms is the seat of the king) and 20 other rooms on the first floor. In each room there are some old furnishings, antiques, that the process looks complicated. Of course, these furnishings have historical and high art value. Although the king’s throne looks simple but the king’s throne still looks beautiful and luxury. The color of the king’s throne is yellow. The king’s throne is located in the main room which is the most extensive and most magnificent room. Maimoon palace is open for public every day from 08.00AM until 05.00PM. Maimoon palace is easily accessible because it is located in Jalan Brigjen Katamso, village of Sukaraja, sub-district of Medan Maimun, not too far from Medan Polonia International Airport (about 10 km).
