At the beginning, Bukit Lawang was an orangutan conservation area established in 1973 to protect the lives of orangutans from hunting, and damage to their homes. Many Things Can Do in Bukit Lawang
Bukit Lawang has a major natural attraction which is the river named Bahorok. Bahorok River became the main icon in Bukit Lawang because along either side of the river there is a dense forest. In Bahorok river, tourists can challenge their courage through river rafting using rubber boat or tire. Bahorok river rafting is not recommended for beginners because flow of the river is rapids, dangerous, and really takes teamwork. For those of you who love to explore the woods, you can do trekking into rainforest and you can interact directly with the fauna in Mount Leuser forest. If you are lucky, you may meet with an orangutan.
You can also enjoy the beauty of the waterfalls and explore caves like the cave Kampret. To be able to interact directly with an orangutan you do not need to do trekking, simply by feeding the orangutans at the feeding site. In Bukit Lawang you can see the attractions of the wildlife and cultural attractions of the local community while enjoying a typical dish. If you want to relax, you can fish and bathe in the crystal clear river. You also can choose to set up camp or stay at the lodges already available, which provide adequate facilities.
