Best Padang Food
Padang food is the cuisine of the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is among the most popular food in Maritime Southeast Asia. It is known across Indonesia as Masakan Padang after the city of Padang the capital city of West Sumatra province. A Padang restaurant can be identified by the amount of food displayed in the front of the establishment. Once seated, the waiter will come bearing a large number of platters with different kinds of dishes in them. Later, a plate with steamed rice and a bowl of water will be presented. The bowl of water is used for hand washing, because locals usually eat this cuisine with their hands.
The most well known of all Padang cuisine is of course rendang. Acknowledge by CNN as one of the 50 most delicious foods in the world, rendang is the reigning champion in the hearts of many Indonesian people. It takes many hours to make this dish, but it is always worth it. Rendang typically features beef as the main ingredient. It is then slowly simmered in a concoction of coconut milk, lemongrass, galangal, garlic, turmeric, ginger and chilies. Chilies are the essence of Padang cuisine.
The another favorite Padang food is satay or sate Padang. This satay is made from beef and beef tongue that are boiled twice in water to make them soft and juicy. Next the meat is cut into bite-size pieces and sprinkled with spices before being grilled on charcoal from coconut shell and served with generous amount of spicy curry sauce on top.
Indonesia people like to eat very spicy food. I mean really really HOT, because we use fresh chilli. The food from this region often uses chicken, beef or fish, prepared in a coconut curry, fried or with sambal (chilli paste) and served with cabbage and curried egg. As with most Indonesian food, sambal is essential in Padang cuisine. Padang has it’s own special type of sambal, sambal ijo (green spicy sauce).
Some of the more famous dishes from Padang include: Rendang – Spiced beef with shredded coconut. Soto padang – Crispy beef in spicy soup. Sate padang – Beef satay in curry sauce. Dendeng – Black, sun dried strips of beef serves with fiery red chillies.
